CLOSURE OF LANKA CHILDREN’S VILLAGE – UP-DATE

To Our Donors, Supporters, and Friends, thank you for your most kind and generous gifts to The Sri Lanka Orphanage Fund, Ltd. We have depended upon the gifts of kind and interested friends of the children we have been helping since the terrible Tsunami of December 2004.

Our original mission was to provide for the well being of children of Sri Lanka orphaned by the killer Tsunami of December 2004. In part, this mission was carried out, but over time the Government of Sri Lanka overcame infrastructure problems created by the Tsunami. The ability of the government to cope with the effects of the Tsunami strengthened, and as the ability of the Government became more able to cope, our help became less needed. Many of the children originally affected were accepted into the homes of relatives who were willing to take care of them. The government of Sri Lanka set a goal to ultimately eliminate orphanages by placing all orphaned children with relatives or in Foster homes. In the mean time, those orphanages already established and operating, have greater operating capacity than is now needed. The Sri Lankan agency responsible for assuring the children’s care has decided to use their available resources in the most efficient way by using the excess capacity of existing orphanage facilities, placing children assigned to our facility into other facilities. As a result, effective January 25, 2009, the Lanka Children’s Village is being closed.

FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR OUR 13 CHILDREN

You will be pleased to learn that we have made financial plans to help the children originally placed in our care. Each of our children will receive a sum of money when they reach the age of 21, which will be sufficient to help them start their adult lives by obtaining a higher level of education, start a small business or assist them in the purchase of a small home. But the people and more especially the children of Sri Lanka and even more particularly the orphans we were responsible for, have ongoing and pressing needs. Therefore, we are modifying and broadening our mission.

A BROADER MISSION

We want you to know that The Sri Lanka Orphanage Fund, Ltd. is modifying and broadening its mission because certain governmental, social and economic changes have taken place in the island nation of Sri Lanka. At the time of the Tsunami, due to the wide devastation it caused, a heavy burden was placed on both government and private agencies alike, and we determined to help in relieving the effects of this natural catastrophe in ways that would be most beneficial to the children affected by it. There were many challenges and issues we had to work through to get the Lanka Children’s Village started. As we worked toward obtaining all of the approvals needed, we were able to open a home to accommodate an original group of thirteen children who had lost their parents. Now, the Orphanage is no longer necessary, but a need continues to provide education, healthcare, and homes as children become adults.

FUTURE PERSPECTIVE

The Sri Lanka Orphanage Fund, Ltd name will be changed to reflect this wider mission. The Sri Lanka Children’s Charity Fund for Education, Health, and Housing, Ltd. or some similar name change will take place soon. Gifts of money donated to the Charity will be used to help enhance educational opportunities for Sri Lankan children who have been orphaned, help to establish medical and health facilities to provide care for children and to enhance opportunities for orphaned children to obtain housing as they reach adulthood. The Board of Directors retains the right to use donated funds for other charitable purposes for Sri Lanka’s Children as circumstances not currently foreseen arise.

The cost of operating this charitable fund is very small and all of the funds collected since the organization was started have been used to care for the children. None of the Directors of the Charity receives any compensation.

Our designation as a recognized 501(c) (3) charity continues, only our name and mission will be changing. Until our name change is fully completed, we will be pleased to accept additional donations from our friends and supporters, which will be used for the purposes described above.

The Sri Lanka Orphanage Fund (SLOF) has been designated as a tax exempt, publicly supported, charitable organization under section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code and all donations are fully tax deductible.
